Dubai International Quilt Show 26th-30th March 2014 - by Jill
I had the opportunity to visit the above show, which was held in a gallery in Festival City Mall, Dubai. The quilts were from the U.A.E and many other countries including Oman, Kuwait, Iran, Saudi Arabia, India, Pakistan, Kenya and New Zealand. There were no traders except Bernina sewing machines and Handi Quiilter. Classes were being held with Ricky Tims, Cindy Needham,
Ina Meyer and longarm quilting with Debby Brown.
I was talking to one of the organisers and she had been taught by Pat Taylor and said she would send me a CD of the quilts. I also visited Classic Quilts shop in Dubai, run by the organisers of the show. A young Chinese lady I was talking to offered to drive me to near by Craftland, which was fabric, haberdashery, knitting and crochet. She had "time to waste" before the lunch time school run. She told me about more fabric places, more in the souk area, but to be careful what I bought! I find the bargaining intimidating and do not believe anything they say, so I decided I had seen enough! My husband was with me, but didn't enter any of the shops!
I have been invited to a guild meeting when I am in Dubai again visiting my son. Quilters are friendly people and it shows what a small world it is. If you are visiting Dubai, I will be happy to give you details of the shops.
