2017 London Quilters
London Quilters' Exhibition - by Jackie S
Last Saturday my quilting friend, Beverley, and I ventured across the river to Swiss Cottage to check out the London Quilters' Exhibition at the Library, which showcases the excellent work of many of its members. It's very easy to get to - go to Swiss Cottage tube station on the Jubilee Line and the Library is two minutes' walk from there turning left out of the station. The exhibition continues until 15th April.
The quilts are hung in a light and airy space, which allows them to be well presented and easily viewed. There is a diverse range of quilting styles, which makes a very colourful and enjoyable display. There are also small items and quilts for sale plus some fabric packs and second-hand books and magazines. Many more quilts are hung outside the exhibition room, including one made by Tracey Chevalier, the author of Girl With a Pearl Earring and The Last Runaway. Her quilt is made entirely by hand.
There are also demonstrations and a have-a-go at kantha quilting table with members of the group to chat to.
It was difficult to choose my favourite quilt to vote for but after much deliberation I chose No 27 - the name and maker of which I can't remember - but it reminded me of 1950s Lucienne Day fabrics made for The Festival of Britain.
The raffle quilt, "London Calling", is a large and colourful quilt made by London Quilters members in aid of Mind and the Rainbow Trust.
After spending about an hour and a half taking in the 50+ quilts we went up to the cafe in the library for a refreshing coffee, and cake, of course.
All in all a most enjoyable Saturday afternoon - not to be missed
