2018 Gail Lawther Workshop

"Vistas of Japan" a Workshop with Gail Lawther - by Anne L

On a lovely sunny Saturday a group of Shirley and Beckenham Quilters met with Gail Lawther to try and create some beautiful scenes of classical Japan.

There were a selection of books, new projects and samples from previous workshops on sale by Gail, and those of us who thought we would not be spending any more money, could not resist the temptation.

After demonstrating initial techniques, we were handed very explicit and clear instructions for completing the projects with constant input and encouragement from Gail. (The Foundation Piecing demonstrations from last Tuesday proved useful) – it doesn’t seem natural to work ‘back to front’ but we did it.

The group used a vast array of colourful fabrics which clearly depicted Mount Fuji at different times of the day and night, and the Water Garden in all its serenity. Good choices ladies.

Concentration levels were keen, especially when using the fusible bias binding. We also expanded our skills with twin needle work but threading the needles by ‘eye’ was a bit of a challenge – we are so used to our automatic needle threaders!!!!

It was a very good Workshop with a group of keen Quilters, happy to learn more skills in an easy, friendly setting.

A good day…
