Exhibition at the Fashion and Textile Museum, 83 Bermondsey Street, just behind London Bridge Station.
The exhibition explores the day and evening styles of the decade through fabulous dresses and photographs. For those of us who love fabrics this exhibition is a real feast for the eyes (sadly we couldn’t touch them!), gorgeous fabrics, many dresses were cut on the bias so the crepes, lames, satins draped round the body beautifully.
Music of the period played throughout and sections of the exhibition have song titles e.g. Brother...can you spare a dime? Let’s face the music and dance! Happy days are here again! The way you wear your hat!.
A section on Women at Work showed clothes worn by homemakers, the typing pool and below stairs.
Another section, People in the Press presents an alternative view of the glamorous 1930’s through the lenses of press photographers such as James Jarche, Leslie Cardew, George Woodbine and Harold Tomlins.
Cecil Beaton had a section devoted entirely to his photographs.
As a decade the 1930’s presented the extremes; from the depths of poverty for many to a sparkling party-filled escape for the wealthy international set.
Jane and I really enjoyed this exhibition and it’s on until 20th January 2019
