2018 Orpington Quilters' Exhibition

Orpington Quilters’ Exhibition – by Jackie S

What's a good way to brighten up a dull, miserable, cold and wet Saturday? Visit a quilt exhibition - Orpington Quilters' Exhibition to be precise on last Saturday at St John's United Reformed Church. When I arrived it was already very busy, filled with enthusiastic viewers.

The quilts were displayed in the church with most of them draped over the pews, so they couldn't be seen to their full advantage but they made a very colourful display with a variety of designs and patterns. There were several hung on frames, making the most of showing off some excellent patchwork and quilting, especially the "block a day" quilt that had a year's worth of small blocks, all in shades of blue and white. As always, it was very difficult to choose a favourite but mine was a large, colourful, scrappy-type quilt comprising many small different blocks on point separated by multi-coloured squares, again set on point, with a white background. There was no programme so I'm afraid I can't remember the maker's name.

As well as a very nice raffle quilt (that I didn't win) there was a tombola - where I did win a very nicely-made little bag.

Unfortunately for us quilters, the trader was Doughtys, occupying a large room absolutely filled with a vast selection of bolts of fabric. Needless to say, this room was very busy and, of course, it was impossible to resist temptation! Just a few half-metres to add to my stash!

After a much needed coffee, I made my way home in the drizzly rain but having had a good day.
