2019 Guildford Quilters

Guildford Quilters' Exhibition - by Jackie S

On Sunday (26th May) I went to Guildford Quilters' Exhibition, which was held in Holy Trinity Church at the top of the High Street. As it was a Sunday there was a service going on when I arrived (this wasn't mentioned on the advertising leaflet) so I had to wait until it had finished.

The exhibition was well worth waiting for though. There were probably about forty quilts hanging around the church in very many sizes and styles, mostly large bed-sized. Most were traditional but there were a few modern ones, all of them very colourful and well made. The most eye-catching was a very large (king size?) quilt made with Liberty fabrics in a colour wash style, with some of the fabrics being dyed to achieve the subtle colour effect. It had a large lattice centre with scalloped edges and appliquéd, raised stems around the outer edge. Apparently, the maker, whose name I can't remember, loves gardening and spends the summer in her garden gathering ideas, then when Winter arrives makes a quilt - only one a year. Not surprising! It was a shame there wasn't a leaflet with names and more information.

There were several quilts I really liked, particularly one with a black background and Japanese fabric squares with interesting sashing - small Japanese fabric squares set in black borders.

There were two raffle quilts and a sales table, a bit pricey I thought. No refreshments on offer, but no entrance fee either - many cafes in Guildford for coffee and cake. I found a Costa in a fantastic Waterstones bookshop - not many quilt books though. As I was about to leave the church, buying my raffle tickets and had gone round at least twice, I met Jane K arriving - hope you enjoyed it too, Jane.

The Guildford ladies were chatty and friendly and apparently have up to 80 members. The exhibition is on until Thursday 30 May, 10.00 - 4.00, so there is still time to visit - highly recommended.
