2020 January Meeting

January Meeting - by Ann De

Although I actually became a member of SQs in June 2019 after being on a waiting list for a year or so, I did really feel like the January meeting was the start of my adventure with the group. I thoroughly enjoyed the four meetings that I had managed to attend in 2019, and the Christmas project was amazing, but with the start of a new year/decade and the fully published program for the year given out in December and clutched in my hand, January felt like the start!

The meeting was buzzing as I arrived and chose the table I would join….everyone is always so friendly and welcoming and I really enjoyed chatting to everyone on our table…..such extensive needlework experience and amazing skills sets are inspirational! I signed up for the forthcoming “Jelly Roll” course, which Claire is due to run on 28th March, and was inspired by the possibility of making one of the four beautiful projects that are suggested for the course….can’t wait!

Claire was, as always, energetic and enthusiastic as she outlined the evening and some of the projects and workshops that are in the calendar for 2020, including the Linus Block (boats) and the Raffle Quilt project. Eileen and Claire handed out the instructions and the cream fabric (we have to add a RED piece) for the “Supernova” block and Claire also circulated the answers to the Christmas quizzes and documents cataloging all the events, visits and projects that SQs had engaged in since they started 20 years ago, which was very interesting and extensive!

Linus packs were available at the side of the hall for folk to take home and construct for the charity. There was also a selection of small quilt packs for people to take home and make for St Hillier Hospital, and these had Australian themed fabrics….I thought these were excellent projects to get involved with and enthusiastically offered to do a few.

There were an amazing selection of reference books available, which any of us could borrow, and magazines and items donated by members for a small donation…..that’s such a great idea which I shall definitely tap into this year!

The January evening was particularly memorable because it marked the groups 20th Anniversary, and an amazing cake (with lots of beautiful edible sewing items on the top) to celebrate the SQ’s 20th anniversary had been purchased to have with the traditional tea break. The cake was ceremoniously cut by Gwen, one of the original founder members who had returned to celebrate this special anniversary with us.

It was a lovely evening and everyone enjoyed the cake and the celebrations. I am so looking forward to the meetings this year and all the different projects that we are undertaking….thank you everyone!
