2021 January Meeting

January Meeting - by Jane M

Our first Zoom meeting of 2021, comprised of some extra participants, some 30 members; a husband in an IT support role and 3 cats!

Grace welcomed everyone to the meeting. Jackie opened the meeting with apologies from Claire who is in Scotland supporting her family through her grandmother’s illness. We all send our love and best wishes to Claire and her family.

Jackie reported that subs had been paid successfully through bank transfer but due to postal problems cheques were coming in slowly. Jackie is going to hold onto the cheques until she feels it is safer to pay them in at the bank.

Anne introduced the programme for 2021 which sounds fantastic considering the Covid restrictions. February and Mays meetings will be speakers on Zoom. We were advised not to throw away any scraps of fabrics no matter how small to use in the March Itzy Bitzy challenge. In case members are fabrically challenged they can look forward to purchasing items over Zoom from The Kilted Quilter all the way from Scotland.

Grace has arranged a workshop with Louisa Lawson on appliqué techniques on a Saturday probably in July, definitely something to look forward to apart from our jabs.

Eileen took great delight in describing our challenges for the year. She asked us to produce as many 12 1/2” star blocks as we can to make up for Linus. Without a drum roll she described our main challenge of producing a quilt no more than 24”x24” titled "Cluedo". We are all imagining how to represent. who did, what, to whom and where in fabric!

Unfortunately without tea and biscuits we moved onto a show and tell session. Too many people to mention showed the quilts they had made using Eileen’s weekly newsletter blocks. Others had made quilts with hexagons, appliqué delicately pieced with stunning colours and patterns. All were certainly impressive and inspirational.

Grace closed the meeting by saying the group may have two new knees but with Eleanor in hospital and Claire in Scotland we are thinking of them at this difficult time.

I’d like to thank the committee for their hard work arranging the programme for the year, whilst we dream of receiving Eileen's e-mail tomorrow with our themes for our own Whodunnit quilt, the mind boggles!!
