2022 Kate Findlay

Kate Findlay - by Julia

This month we welcomed Kate Findlay as our guest speaker. Her background was in design and technology, designing carpets. Following redundancy she became a teacher incorporating textiles into her work with children. Her year 5 group quilt of Henley was amazing. This spurred her on to make a series of pieces depicting Henley from various viewpoints. As an artist and designer she was then lead her to do another series based on the Hadron Collider a machine that studies atoms. These were very mixed media and she learned a lot about making quilts as a result.

Her passion for textiles then made her decide to leave teaching and concentrate on her appliqué designs full time, which lead to a series of bird pictures that were eventually used as greeting cards.

She then progressed to making landscapes in textiles using fabric confetti to great effect. She sells kits of these on shopping TV and directly from her website. She also runs workshops.  We had the opportunity to buy some of her lovely products and the evening ended with a raffle, including some of her items and a nice cuppa.

An inspirational evening and someone I for one would like to do a workshop with!
