July Meeting - by Jane M
July’s meeting started with Deidre giving us our final instructions for our quilt challenge for this year and reminded us to return our exhibition forms and any Linus quilts or Christmas stockings at the next meeting. She went on to introduce our speaker Lee Brown whose talk was titled “Life in the Quilt Lane”
Lee is an accomplished patch worker, quilter and embroiderer who has taught all disciplines to diploma level! She showed us her first quilts made from Colfax and Fowler samples of furnishing fabrics, acquired by her daughter from her Saturday job.
Lee’s many quilts allowed us to see her skills with dying fabrics, designing patterns, particularly using mirrors and fussy cutting. The Baltimore quilts she showed using, needle turned appliqué were sublime! Lee tried to inspire us with some of her UFO’s, one with 27” blocks and a second with hundreds of tiny pieced blocks!
Lee’s message seemed to me to be, we should all have a go at anything suggesting, if you looked at it from a distance upside down , through your legs , you would notice any faults! I’ll give it a go! Her final statement I thought was a great one as we get ready for our mini exhibition - “Everyone can quilt/ draw, you just have to apply yourself!”
Good luck Shirley Quilters the world is your oyster!
