Block of the Month

Block of the Month 2023

Nine blocks worked on over nine months, some members substituted one or more of the "given blocks" for various reasons

Details are beside the photographs

In The Pink    - by Ann S

The main fabric used was chosen for the many different colours in the print which gave me lots of choices to match up with. Having been a quilter for many years, I made my choice of blocks from a mixture of old favourites and new-to-me blocks.

 Spring Flowers  - by Sarah

My third patchwork project, an experiment with colours I wouldn’t usually choose

For Aoife and Miaea-  by Bernadette

Time to use up a collection of fabric that has been in my stash for some time. There is quite a lot of pink in the quilt: hopefully my five-year-old granddaughters will enjoy cuddling into it when they sleep over at Nana’s.

Oh, I do Like to be Beside the Seaside - by Erica

My Riviera-esque challenge fabric inspired me to follow a seaside theme for my quilt. Where possible, I interpreted the challenge blocks in ways that depict the sights of a day at the beach. I have a nautical compass, a pinwheel spinning in the breeze and a beach ball tossed high up into the sunny sky. Can you see any other beachy motifs? I found it a challenge to embrace the unknowns of this task – which blocks were coming next? How much feature fabric should I use each month so that I have enough to see me though all nine blocks? Will my colour choices for each block give me a nice layout for the finished item?

For me it became an exercise in surrendering control and having to trust that a creative solution would be found to any challenges that might crop up as the months went on. I found that my quilt design evolved with every new block that was added ‒ which is the opposite to my normal “plan it first” approach to quilt design. Embracing the uncertainty and forging forward every month was the most daunting part of this challenge for me, but became the aspect that I found the most rewarding. I thoroughly enjoyed this challenge, thank you.
