Charm Pack Challenge

 Charm Pack Challenge

One of our 2024 Challenges has been to make the Moda Love Charm quilt using a single Charm Pack and background fabric.  The quilt is a combination of squares and half-square triangles which are carefully placed to achieve this star design.  We hope you enjoy the man different interpretations of this quilt.

  Zanzibar Dreaming - by Erica

I did not use a traditional Charm Pack for this challenge.  Instead, I used a pack of block and screen printed fabric squares from my stash.  The squares of fabric were off-grain, out of square and not traditional quilting cotton, but the vibrant mix of colours and patterns felt perfect for this challenge.  Before using them, I had to reduce each of the pieces to 4 inches to get a "square", so my blocks might be smaller than others in this challenge.  I paired the patterned fabrics with black as my solid, on the advice of Judi Mendelssohn, who spoke at Shirley Quilters in 2021.  The final quilting was done using a Baby Lock Sashiko machine.  The energy of the finished piece makes me feel as if I am drifting through an African market, immersed in colours that are brightened by the hot sun.

Spring Flowers - by Inez

I ordered a plain Charm Pack and a floral pack for the first time.  The latter was very random, so there is no co-ordinating theme apart from the pink background and binding.

Sweet Melodies - by Sarah

This quilt is made from the Moda "Sweet Melodies" Charm Pack, described as "a happy collection of daisies, dots and musical notes".  I found it very challenging to find an arrangement I liked, with only a limited number of squares of each fabric.  I reduced these even further by removing the ones with the musical notes!   But with a slight tweaking of the pattern, I eventually found a design which satisfied my need for symmetry - nearly!

Change of Seasons - by Helen T

I used a Kaffe Fas   Quilted with a walking foot in a sunburst style.  Lesson learned: don't mark out a quilt with red tailor's chalk!
