Disappearing Initials

Members were asked to make a quilt using only colours based on their initials, plus a neutral. A further complication was that it had to be based on a disappearing block.

We used our February meeting this year (2024) to explore different types of disappearing blocks - members then went away to cut, piece, cut and reassemble. Here are some of the results.

  Perseverance - by Anne R

Disappearing half-square triangles - instructions from the Tulip Square patterns website.  I was intrigued by how the half-square triangles morphed into something that looked so intricate and complex.

   Aubergine, shades of Jade, Raspberry

My Japanese Nine-Patch Pinwheel - by Jane M

I was shown a disappearing nine-patch pattern by a Shirley  Quilters member and fell in love with it.  I had never made one before but really enjoyed the experience and hopefully improved my technique, not without hiccups.  I was very inventive with my colour names but am very pleased with the outcome.

Japanese Rose, Myrtle Green

Whirligig - by Jackie B

A double  This quilt was quite a challenge as I didn't realise how difficult I was going to find this.  I nearly didn't finish it as health issues had prevented me from giving myself the time it needed.

In the end, I decided to follow Judi Kirk's motto:

1 - Enjoy  it (not sure about this quilt)

2 - Finished is better than perfect

3.  Nobody checks the points if it's keeping you warm
