Disappearing Initials
Members were asked to make a quilt using only colours based on their initials, plus a neutral. A further complication was that it had to be based on a disappearing block.
We used our February meeting this year (2024) to explore different types of disappearing blocks - members then went away to cut, piece, cut and reassemble. Here are some of the results.
Christmas in Monochrome - by Erica
I decided on ebony and white to represent my initials E. W. I settled on two disappearing four-patch variations for my blocks - a ^2 finished block with the secondary or "disappearing" seams at 1" or 2" from the centre seam. A kaleidoscope of intricate mosaic floor designs could be created using just these two blocks, but though they looked wonderful in a photograph, they were strangely overwhelming to the naked eye. Instead I opted for this pattern, which is easier on the eye and makes me think of the holly leaves and berries on top of our Christmas pudding in December. My favourite discovery while playing with these blocks was that I could arrange the patches of the outer blocks in such a way that they formed a self-made border within the quilt. I'd like to explore this further. Long arm quilted by Juanita Dodd of Cinnamon Quilting.

Nine Patch in Disguise - by Jackie S
Made from a nine-patch block that Jenny Doan of the Missouri Star Quilt Company calls "Madness Block". Four blocks used for my quilt. Machine-pieced and quilted.

Beach Water - by Joyce
I like the watery look of the jade fabric, so I contrasted it with sand, using two patterns demonstrated at one of our monthly meetings.
