Disappearing Initials

Disappearing Initials

Members were asked to make a quilt using only colours based on their initials, plus a neutral. A further complication was that it had to be based on a disappearing block.

We used our February meeting this year (2024) to explore different types of disappearing blocks - members then went away to cut, piece, cut and reassemble. Here are some of the results.

The One that Started it All - by Kate E

A disappearing four-patch made from blocks of four half-square triangles from a design by Brita Nelson.  The original inspiration for this Challenge.

  Fuchsia Fun - by Freddie

Concentration and patience were the name of the game here, along with accurate measuring, very careful cutting plus lots of starch!  My main fabric is called Fuchsia.  I first met the block, The Disappearing Hourglass, at an SQ meeting and later found it demonstrated by Jenny Dolan on the Missouri Star website.  After lots of planning and aborted attempts, I started with an 8 1/2 in square.  It was certainly challenging and took many hours to complete, but for me, the final result was worth the effort

Hourglass Medallion - by Debbie

This quilt was made from a traditional hourglass block which was then cut into nine smaller blocks, repositioned and sewn together to form the medallion block.  The quilt layers have been hand-sewn together using my own design, in Perle thread.
