2018 Shirley Quilters' Exhibition

Shirley Quilters' Exhibition - by Linda (a visitor)

I spent a lovely couple of hours at Shirley Quilters’ exhibition on 6th October. As usual there was a great variety of beautiful quilts and smaller items to see.

In one room, I was impressed by the number of completed ‘block of the month’ quilts that had been completed. Although everyone used the same nine block designs, the variety in the completed quilts was amazing. There was everything from a muted grey version through to the brightest fabrics imaginable, but every colour-way worked well with the modern block designs.

The main hall of quilts held a lovely range of quilts in all sizes. Several lovely quilts had been made for new grandchildren and some very impressive double bed quilts showcased both hand and machine piecing. This room also showed some of the wide variety of projects that inventive stitchers can make, from bags to bowls and rugs.

The third hall showcased projects made at workshops taught during the year featuring miniature landscapes and oriental inspired stained glass techniques. Also in this room was a very large number of quilts made for donation to the Linus project which gifts quilts to sick children. Shirley Quilters have clearly taken this cause to their hearts and have made a huge contribution over the years.

There was the opportunity to spend the pennies - never one to be missed! There was a lovely stand where fabrics and quilting accessories could be purchased. If however you wanted something ready made, then there was a stall of goods made by members or a beautiful raffle quilt that was a must to try and win.

Last but not least was the chance to enjoy tea and cake in the company of friends and have a good chat and catch up. All in all, a great afternoon and I must congratulate the committee for their work through the years organising what is obviously a very successful group and to all the members who contributed to the exhibition.
